Join Val at the Old School Studio and learn how she paints bold and expressive, acrylic/mixed media floral images on a large canvas. (Click here to see more of Val’s work.) Mixed media painting has become increasingly popular in the last 5 years, but for many people the thought of launching themselves into the world of scribbling, splashing and layering paint can be very daunting, so be prepared to play! This will be your perfect opportunity to abandon your-self to trying a variety of mediums and techniques, and all without the commitment of purchasing a full range of products.

Val will give numerous short demonstrations, plus plenty of one-to-one tuition during the two days, starting with establishing good composition, before moving onto the application of colour and texture.

Who should attend?
This workshop suits both beginners and individuals with some experience in acrylics. If you enjoy experimenting with new mediums and bold colours and have an interest in working towards a more abstracted style of painting, this workshop will be perfect for you. Enthusiasm is what counts!

What to bring:

  • Small sketchbook & 2B pencil for thumbnail sketches (or seed drawings as they’re sometimes called)
  • Deep profile stretched canvas – not too small – 24” x 24” or larger
  • Willow charcoal (not compressed)
  • A basic selection of soft pastels, plus a can of fixative (no hairspray please)
  • A small selection of oil pastels
  • Acrylic Inks; bring whatever you have
  • Heavy body acrylic paints; bring whatever you have
  • Palette knives, colour shapers; bring whatever you have
  • Brushes: a selection of synthetic and/or bristle brushes, including a 1’ & wider flat if you have it
  • Stay-Wet Palette: or a make-shift one
  • Old enamel or white porcelain dinner plate for inks
  • Apron, kitchen roll, thin disposable gloves
  • Fresh flowers in a quirky vase if you have one – but don’t worry if you don’t, Val will also have vases of flowers for you to use as reference
