Painting Portraits from Photographs

Start Date: 21 November 2018
Time: 10:00am - 4.00pm
With: Rachel Haynes
Cost: £75

Overview:

Join Rachel at the Old School Studio for this one day workshop which focuses on the exciting and varied aspects of drawing and painting life-like portraits of people from photographs.

Have you ever wanted to create a realistic portrait of a family member, a friend or the likeness of a famous celebrity, if so, this workshop is just what you’ve been looking for!  Rachel will show you how to translate photos of your favourite people into life-like portraits covering every aspect, from creating a 3-dimensional look, to familiarising you with the small, but telling details of each individual facial feature, to truly capture the likeness of your subject.

Students will work from photos of their choice, drawing and painting in their preferred media.  Advice will also be given on the use of materials and colour mixing for accurate skin tones.

Who should attend?

This is suitable for anyone who would like to improve their portraiture skills, whether a beginner or an experienced artist, as teaching and guidance will be tailored to meet individual needs.

Tips on selecting a reference photograph to work from:

Decide if you want the person to be male or female; male portraits tend to have stronger features and may have facial hair, female faces are more rounded, and softer.  Decide if you want the person to be younger or older; older faces can be more interesting, yet more challenging, because of the extra lines and texture, and can also convey the most emotion.  Very young children are easier to draw, but may be harder if you’re used to drawing adults.

What to bring:

  • Photos to work from (Rachel will also have folders of reference photos that you can use)
  • Drawing materials – pencils, Conte™ sticks, graphite sticks or charcoal
  • Drawing paper or drawing pad
  • Painting medium – pastels, watercolours, acrylics, oils, whatever you prefer!
