Portraits in Watercolour

Start Date: 08 June 2019
End Date: 09 June 2019
Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm
With: Stephie Butler
Cost: £125.00

Overview:

It’s my pleasure to welcome back Stephie for a second year at the Old School Studio. Award winning artist Stephie will show you how to paint beautiful portraits that are full of colour and impressionistic feeling, whilst sharing her secrets on how to portray feelings and emotion in your work, all making this workshop a truly unique experience!
You will be encouraged to develop your own style, painting with your instincts as well as technique, and to simplify drawings prior to painting to enable a looser style. You will also be painting with col-our that deviates away from the ‘norm’, and most of all, you’ll have fun and come away feeling truly inspired and wanting to paint more! This two day workshop will consist of ongoing demonstrations and one-to-one tuition, thereby enabling everyone to work to the best of their ability.

What do you need to bring?
Reference photo – either yours or Stephie’s, but it needs to be a good, clear, large photo.

  • Paints: Stephie says always buy the best you can afford as Artists quality as opposed to Student quality does make a difference! Colours: Aureolin, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Permanent Rose, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Ultra-Marine Blue & Cadmium Red (preferrably Winsor & Newton™, Daniel Smith™ or Daler Rowney™) Please bring any other colours you have to experiment with!
  • Brushes – Stephie uses 2 or 3 Isabey™ wash brushes of a medium size, but don’t rush out and buy these, as a large wash brush will do. Next there’s a couple of Sable rounds about size 8 & 12. And lastly a Rigger brush which will get a lot of use, a size 2 or 3 will do.
  • Paper – The ideal would be Arches™ watercolour paper 1/2 sheets (22” x 15”) NOT or Rough, 300gsm / 140lb, but what-ever you use it must be artist quality
  • Palette – anything with a bit of space (not too small as you will need to mix a few washes)
  • Masking fluid (either white or clear)
  • Misc items: salt, cling film, masking tape
  • Kitchen roll & apron

This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience, from relative beginners (although some prior experience in watercolour is useful) to the experienced artist; enthusiasm is what counts!
